PROS: The 308 is very economical and the quality of the cabin is very high.
CONS: Resale values are low and space is limited in the rear seats. Rivals offer a better driving experience too.
The 308 Oxygo e-HDi with Stop and Start's 1.6-litre diesel engine produces 112bhp and 199lb-ft of torque. This makes for an 0-62mph time of 12.5 seconds and a top speed of 118mph which is perfectly adequate for a car of this type.
However, it is in the handling stakes that the 308 falls behind its rivals. It is a very heavy car and is slow to respond to driver input. There is very little body roll and plenty of grip but the 308 is simply no fun to drive.
However, the 308 makes a decent long distance cruiser thanks to its quiet ride.
The 308 is a fairly handsome car but its front end is ruined by its awful Peugeot corporate grille. On the inside, the dashboard is very stylish and there is a general feeling of quality thanks to the use of soft-touch plastics.
Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, air-con, electric windows, cruise control, Sat-Nav, Bluetooth and a CD player with MP3 connectivity. Metallic paint will cost you an extra £440 and rear parking sensors can be specified for £310.
Peugeot are renowned for making unreliable cars and the 308 finished poorly in the 2011 J D Power Survey with owners citing both mechanical problems and interior issues.
The 308 scored five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests and comes as standard with six airbags and stability control.
A 347-litre boot is about average for a mid-sized hatchback like the 308. The high boot-line hampers loading though, which can be a problem. Fold the rear seats down and a lot more space becomes available - 1,398 litres in total.
The 308 Oxygo e-HDi with Stop and Start is one of the priciest models in the 308 range at £19,165 and, at this price, there are a number of cars on the market which offer better value for money.
However, running costs should be very low as the 308 manages 67.3mpg (combined) and emits just 109g/km of CO2, putting it under VED band B.
Resale values will be very low.
