MPG: 42.2
CO2: 155
0-62 Mph: 8.8 secs
BHP: 156 BHP
Range: 557 miles
PROS: Nice interior, good value, decent performance
CONS: Ungainly looks, question mark over reliability, no fun to drive
The 308's 1.6-litre four-pot petrol engine generates 156bhp and 177lb-ft of torque which is enough to propel it from 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 133mph. This means that the 308 1.6 THP is quite fast for a car of this type.
Don't for one second think that this makes it fun to drive, though. The 308 manages to pull off the rare trick of having both a firm ride and a lack of body control. Through the bends the 308 rolls about quite a lot and although the steering is quick, it feels wooly and numb.
The 308 cuts a fairly attractive profile but its front end is a little ugly thanks to the oddly shaped grille. The interior on the other hand is relatively nice.
Standard kit includes alloy wheels, cruise control, central locking, air-con, Bluetooth, electric windows and a CD player with MP3 connectivity. Rear parking sensors, sat-nav, metallic paint and climate control are all optional extras costing £310, £440, £735 and £290 respectively.
The 308 achieved the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests and should therefore be a relatively safe car. It's not the most reliable car in its class, however, and put on a pretty poor show in last year's JD Power Survey with owners reporting mechanical problems and issues with the quality of the interior.
Practicality-wise, you get 348-litres of boot space - which is adequate - but space in the rear is at a premium.
At £17,745, the Peugeot 308 Active 1.6 THP is relatively good value for money. However, the running costs won't be especially low and you'll struggle to top a combined 42.2mpg. CO2 emissions of 155g/km also make sure that the 308 falls under VED band G. Group 19 insurance also means that the 308 will be fairly costly to insure for a car of this size.

The 308 SW is a very good estate car for those on a tight budget. It offers an attractive package thanks to an impressive amount of interior space, however there are better cars around for the cash.
