The Peugeot 308 is one of the most popular medium sized hatchbacks on the market at the moment, and this version is designed to compete with the hot hatches such as the Volkswagen Golf GTi. One of the issues with the 308 is that the driving experience isn't quite as good as some of its rivals, but it still does deliver hot hatch performance and is also quite luxurious, but comes with a price tag to match.

PROS:  This is the fastest and most powerful 308 on the market, with a sporty styling pack added and inside it has some favourable luxuries which make this one of the nicest 308's in the range.

CONS:  The ride for this car is really rather firm, and because of the extra power in the GT it also has some of the most disappointing fuel efficiency figures.

Behind the Wheel

The driving experience for the 308 GT is a little mixed, because it does have some good points such as ample grip when cornering and a minimal amount of body roll meaning that it is very stable. Unfortunately, the suspension on the 308 is very firm and this is a big problem because the ride is very bouncy throughout, and is particularly an issue when a small pothole or bump unsettles the car when cornering at speed. In terms of the driving position, the pedals are a little too far to the left which is one issue, and the pillars towards the back can obstruct visibility when you come to a junction set at an angle.

The engine performance figures are a very positive feature, with the acceleration and top speed among the best in the class. The acceleration from 0-62mph is achieved in only 7.7 seconds, and the top speed of 147mph is enough to compete with many sports cars, and for the most part the cabin is fairly refined too.

Looks & Equipment

French cars have often been among the most attractive cars on the market, and the Peugeot 308 can certainly be counted among these with a bulging bonnet and a large air intake giving it a nice front end. The back end is flanked with large tail lights, and the chrome detailing adds to the attractive sporty styling that is found with this car. The alloy wheels that are included with the car do add to the overall sporty look of the car, and help to make it a nice model to look at.

The GT version of the 308 does come with a good level of trim on the whole, and the inclusion of leather seats and climate control certainly helps to make this a comfortable cabin. Bluetooth connectivity is another welcome feature with the 308, and the power folding mirrors and CD stereo add to the feeling of quality within the car.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The space in the front of the car is fine, and the headroom in the back of the car is very good, but legroom is a little bit cramped for taller people. The boot space is quite good, but the shape of the door means that accessing that space can be a little awkward when you want to transport larger items. Peugeot hasn't got an excellent reputation for the reliability, and so far the 308 hasn't been given the best reviews in terms of reliability.

The Peugeot 308 does have plenty of safety equipment, and the typical range of airbags included with the car do help to look after occupants should the car become involved in a collision. It also has a range of driving aids that help to keep the car stable and under control, which is why it has been given five stars in the Euro NCAP test.

Value for Money

This is the most expensive Peugeot 308 that is currently available, and with a list price of £21,745, it does put it in the same league as other medium sized hot hatches.

It is also a fairly expensive car to keep on the road, with the engine only able to deliver an average 40.9mpg. The insurance group is well above average for other hatchbacks of this size, and depreciation is also a problem for the 308. The package is completed with a three year sixty thousand mile warranty, and is also delivered with a one year membership of the AA.
