The new Vauxhall Astra VXR Extreme, which has been revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, is set to become the most powerful front-wheel drive car in Vauxhall's history when it goes into production later this year.

Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine sending "over 296bhp" to the front wheels, the VXR Extreme is fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox with a limited slip differential, Brembo brakes and specially-developed tyres.

The VXR Extreme also weighs around 100kg less than the standard VXR thanks to a carbon-fibre front splitter, bonnet, roof, diffuser and rear wing. The rear seats have also been removed entirely to help with the weight saving, and in their place you'll find a roll cage.

No performance figures have yet been released; however, given that the Extreme is 20bhp more powerful and 100kg lighter than the standard Astra VXR, we're expecting significant improvements over that car's 5.9 second 0-62mph time.

We're also expecting a hefty price increase too. Vauxhall has not confirmed how many Extremes will be going into production or how much they will cost; however, a significant hike over the standard car's £27,260 asking price is inevitable.
