The production version of Citroen's radical new C4 Cactus has been revealed at the Geneva Motor Show ahead of its UK launch in October.
The revolutionary hatchback is designed to take on the likes of the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf in the small family car market; however, unlike its main rivals, the C4 Cactus marks a drastic departure for the C-segment, introducing a wide range of exciting new features and technology.
For a car of its size, the Cactus is incredibly light, tipping the scales at just 965kg. Citroen has managed to cut weight by using high-strength steel and an aluminium bonnet, while the winding rear windows have been replaced by pop-out ones.
A range of lightweight engines also contribute to the weight-saving, with a 1.6-litre 91bhp diesel on offer which is capable of 91.1mpg and CO2 emissions of just 82g/km. There will also be a slightly perkier 99bhp diesel, along with a brace of three-cylinder petrol engines, one turbocharged and one naturally-aspirated, which will produce 109bhp and 81bhp, respectively.
Inside, the traditional dials have been replaced with a pair of digital displays, with a seven-inch touchscreen built into the centre console controlling all of the car's major functions. A full-length panoramic sunroof will also be on offer with special tinting which blocks UV rays, negating the need for a blind, which, of course, would add weight.
Outside, the Cactus becomes the first car in the world to come with 'Air Bump' door protectors -- cushions of plastic which protect the bodywork from dings and scrapes. The floating roof, split front headlights and vibrant colour combinations all contribute to making the Cactus an eye-catching car.
Citroen has yet to announce any pricing details for the new car, but a starting price around the £15,000 seems likely.
