Here’s our first look at the new electric Renault 4 small SUV, due for release in 2025. The bold Renault 4Ever Trophy concept car was revealed today at the 2022 Paris Motor Show.

A compact, high-riding and authentically 4x4-themed SUV, the new Renault 4Ever Trophy aims to put the famous 60-year-old French car firmly back on the map, ahead of its 2025 relaunch. The electric five-door Renault 4 SUV will line up alongside the new Renault 5 supermini, due a year earlier in 2024.

The new 4Ever Trophy blends traditional Renault 4 styling cues into a thoroughly modern and streamlined shape. Its aim is to attract older generations and younger enthusiasts alike. Right away, the silhouette shows the familiar prominent bonnet, bumper and gently angled bootlid, along with trapezoidal rear side windows with rounded corners sitting just above the wheels.

There are no styling features on the front wings, nor any side indicator repeaters, and the wings are cleanly-cut to separate them from the wide, horizontal bonnet. There’s also an elaborate front grille, with the new Renault logo freestanding in the centre, plus built-in round lamps featuring Matrix LED lights. The classic Renault 4 pill-shaped tail lamps are reinterpreted at the rear, again with modern LED tech.

The Renault 4Ever Trophy concept car has a carbon fibre roof, atop which sits a large spare wheel, for some added motor show glamour. This helps it measure a lofty 1,900mm in overall height – making it as tall as a Range Rover. Its ultra-wide-arched body measures 1,950mm across, although overall length is more compact, at less than 4.2 metres. Magenta styling details on the roof straps, suspension springs and wheel emblems contrast with the Gun Metal Silver paint.

The giant wheels measure 19 inches at the front and rear, yet there’s a huge 200mm ground clearance around the wheelarches. A novel touch is the variable compressor fitted to every wheel, allowing tyre pressures to be adjusted from inside the new Renault 4Ever Trophy concept. Other fun all-terrain features on the concept car include a shovel and waffle boards on the bootlid.

The new Renault 4 production car will be sold alongside the upcoming new Renault 5, in the same way today’s Renault Clio supermini and Renault Captur small SUV offer choice to those looking to buy or lease a new Renault. Both models will, in time, replace today’s popular Renault Zoe E-Tech.

The new Renault 4 will be based on the advanced CMF-BEV architecture that will underpin all Renault’s B-segment small cars. Production will take place in northern France, at the firm’s ElectriCity hub – just as the original Renault 4 was built in France throughout its lifetime.

The Renault 4Ever Trophy concept car previews a reborn Renault 4 that will be roomy, versatile, practical and ready to cross all roads. The production version may not have the extreme 4x4 capabilities of the concept car – although as it’s so relatively easy to make four-wheel-drive EVs, don’t rule this out – but it will be a thoroughly family-friendly model, bringing a touch of excitement to the small SUV sector.

With an expected driving range of more than 250 miles, and a price tag from £30,000, the new Renault 4 electric SUV will be a much-anticipated new arrival in 2025. The Renault 4Ever Trophy concept car is our first taste of the exciting new model that aims to build further on the eight million sales of the beloved original. We can’t wait to watch the new Renault 4 develop further.
