Volkswagen has released information on the new Golf, ahead of its official unveiling on 4th September.
The big news is that the new Mk7 Golf is a full 100kg lighter than the model it replaces thanks to the high-tensile steel used in its construction.
Thanks to the new car's lower kerb weight, combined with a new range of engines and improved aerodynamics, the Mk7 Golf emits less CO2 than the Mk6 -- Volkswagen claims a 13.9% reduction in CO2 emissions across the range.
Despite the weight-saving and the improved eco-credentials, the Mk7 is the largest Golf ever, and is a full 5.6cm longer and 1.3cm wider than its predecessor. There's also much more interior space thanks to improved packaging.
The new Golf is based on Volkswagen's new MQB platform, which is also used by the new Audi A3 and SEAT Leon.
The Golf will be unveiled in an exclusive preview on 4th September and will be unveiled to the world at the Paris Motor Show on 27th September. It will go on sale later this year.
