More information, a brief history and our verdict on the Audi A3

The Audi A3 was the world’s first premium compact hatchback when it was launched back in the 1990s. The formula has clearly worked, with each subsequent version becoming ever more popular. The Audi A3 is one of the most searched-for new cars to buy or lease for motorists in the UK.

It faces two very compelling arch-rivals in the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class. Like those cars, it is offered as a five-door hatchback, which Audi calls the A3 Sportback. There is also a four-door A3 Saloon.

The original Audi A3 set the template for premium hatchbacks back in 1996. It was an upmarket alternative to mainstream cars such as the Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf and Honda Civic. The five-door A3 Sportback joined the original three-door model in 1999, then the second generation of Audi A3 went on sale in 2003.

The third-generation Audi A3 included the first plug-in hybrid version, called the A3 e-tron, which was launched in 2014. By now, there was also a range-topping high-performance RS3, which boasted a ferocious 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo engine.

The current Audi A3 range was introduced in 2020. Because it is derived from the same underpinnings as the latest Volkswagen Golf, it is a roomy and accommodating car, and enjoys a huge amount of technology – both standard and optional. The A3 drives in a sophisticated and very mature way, while the 400PS RS3 version is as thrilling as ever.

Audi A3 models, trims, specs, engine sizes and more

Audi offers a comprehensive range of engines and specifications for the latest A3 Sportback, in keeping with its high-tech image. Regular models have a front-wheel-drive setup, while more powerful versions use quattro four-wheel drive.

The Audi A3 Sportback also offers a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch automatic gearboxes. On the more potent models, as well as the plug-in hybrids, the S tronic auto is standard.

Naturally, there’s a wide range of trims across the Audi A3 Sportback range, meaning lots of choice for those buying or leasing a new car. Even the most affordable models have a good standard spec, while the range-toppers have features normally associated with much larger and pricier Audis.

  • Audi A3 30 TFSI petrol: The most affordable Audi A3 Sportback uses a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. It sounds small, but it produces 110PS, so 0-62mph takes a decent 10.6 seconds. It returns up to 55.4mpg with the optional S tronic automatic transmission, or 51.4mpg in manual guise.

  • Audi A3 35 TFSI petrol: Move up to the 35 TFSI and the engine becomes a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo with 150PS. Torque jumps from 200Nm to 250Nm, and the 0-62mph time falls to 8.7 seconds. It’s able to average 50.4mpg as a manual, or just over 54mpg in seven-speed S tronic guise.

  • Audi A3 S3 petrol: The Audi S3 uses a 310PS 2.0-litre turbo engine, paired with a standard S tronic automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. Zero to 62mph takes 4.8 seconds and it returns up to 38.1mpg.

  • Audi A3 RS3 petrol: The monster at the top of the range is the 400PS Audi RS3. Its charismatic 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo engine shoots it from 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds, although average economy of 32.1mpg is the price you pay for such performance.

  • Audi A3 40 TFSI e plug-in hybrid: If fuel economy is a concern, why not try a plug-in hybrid Audi A3? The 40 TFSI e has a 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine and an electric motor, with total system power of 204PS, while the battery gives it 37 miles of pure electric range. Standstill to 62mph takes 7.6 seconds. Choose the entry-level version and you’ll enjoy an eight percent company car Benefit-in-Kind rating.

  • Audi A3 45 TFSI e plug-in hybrid: The 45 TFSI e uses a similar setup, but has more power; 245PS means 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds. Benefit-in-Kind tax is rated at 12 percent.

  • Audi A3 35 TDI diesel: The sole remaining Audi A3 Sportback turbodiesel is the 35 TDI. Its 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine produces 150PS, for 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds, plus average fuel economy of up to 61.4mpg.

Audi A3 features as standard & optional extras

The starting Audi A3 Sportback trim is called Technik, but so generous is the spec it features as standard, it doesn’t seem right to call it ‘entry-level’. Offered with the A3’s most affordable petrol and diesel engines, it features 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, electric folding door mirrors, the Audi Virtual Cockpit and Audi MMI Navigation with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

The A3 Sport gets larger 17-inch alloys and exterior trim upgrades to give it a sportier appearance. Standard air-con becomes electronic climate control and the seats gain smart part-leather upholstery.

One of our favourite trims is the Audi A3 Sportback S line. This has 18-inch wheels and lower-slung sports suspension, plus an S line exterior styling makeover. There are front sports seats inside, trimmed in distinctive S line upholstery, along with a dark headlining. The adaptive LED headlights and LED rear lights get eye-catching dynamic indicators.

The A3 Edition 1 sees the wheels grow further, to 19 inches, while the car gains a black exterior styling pack and matrix LED headlights. Seats are electrically adjustable and they’re heated as well.

The Audi A3 Sportback has a rich choice of optional extras, as you’d expect of a premium car. If you want them all, but also want to save a bit of cash, why not choose the A3 Vorsprung? Pretty much everything that’s listed as an optional extra is fitted as standard here – it’s positively palatial.

The Audi A3’s exterior dimensions are:

Audi A3 Sportback:

  • Length: 4,343mm
  • Width: 1,816mm
  • Height: 1,425mm
  • Ground clearance: 141mm

Audi A3 Saloon:

  • Length: 4,495mm
  • Width: 1,816mm
  • Height: 1,425mm
  • Ground clearance: 141mm
