The 30 millionth Volkswagen Golf has rolled off the production line in Wolfsburg, nearly forty years since the model was introduced.

This makes the Golf by some margin the most successful European car of all time.

The Golf went into production in Wolfsburg on 29 March 1974 and since then an average of more than 2,000 models have found homes worldwide every day.

But despite the Golf's impressive record, the legendary hatchback is still some way off eclipsing the Toyota's Corolla's record of 39 million units.

The 30 millionth car is a Golf TDI BlueMotion, which can return 88.3mpg, making it the most fuel-efficient Golf ever made.
