Toyota will unveil the latest development of its FCV (Fuel Cell Vehicle) Concept at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month.
The concept previews a production model scheduled for release in 2015, featuring pioneering fuel cell technology.
Toyota claims that the FCV is capable of covering at least 300 miles on a full tank of hydrogen which takes just three minutes to refill -- around the same as for a petrol or diesel vehicle.
Measuring 4,870mm long, 1,810mm wide and 1,535mm high, the FCV has been designed not only to be aerodynamically efficient but also to symbolise water which, as I'm sure you know, is the sole product of the hydrogen-oxygen reaction which powers hydrogen vehicles. The doors and filler cap have been designed to look like water and the rear end of the car is said to look like a catamaran.
Powered by a lightweight fuel cell stack and a pair of high-pressure hydrogen tanks, the FCV is capable of a maximum power output of "at least 100kW" (134bhp).
In fact, Toyota claims that if you were to forget the driving and use the FCV purely as a generator, the FCV could power enough electricity to power the average Japanese (and, we would imagine, British) home for a week.
