Toyota is paying tribute to its long sports car history with a new concept car, which was revealed at the Detroit Motor Show today.
The FT-1 concept, which was designed at Toyota's Calty studio in California, is the result of Toyota's aim to produce the ultimate sports car and has been influenced by past models from Toyota's sports car history, including the Supra and the 2000GT of the mid-1960s.
Based on a front-engine/rear-wheel-drive platform, the FT-1 features a cockpit set way back over the rear wheels, a wraparound windscreen and a side glass arrangement which clearly pay tribute to the 2000GT.
The FT-1's bodywork looks like a discordant mishmash of angles and creases; however, Toyota claims that the body is designed for optimum aerodynamic performance, with large air intakes, exhaust ports and a retractable rear wing.
Inside, there's a Formula One-style steering wheel and a colour head-up display, and the designers have pushed the A-pillars as far back as possible, improving visibility for the driver when cornering.
Toyota has yet to announce whether the FT-1 will make it into production; however, we expect more information to be made available shortly.
