Following our article revealing the top performers in efficiency, we can now share the cars which have found themselves rooted to the bottom of the table.
Over the past twelve months, over 200 cars were tested by the True MPG team; not only in lab conditions but in ‘real world’ trials. The figures give a true reflection of how you can expect a new car to perform and you may not be surprised to hear that they often differ wildly from the official figures released by manufacturers!
Here’s the list of the worst offenders and their true mpg:
1. Vauxhall VXR8 GTS Petrol - True MPG: 19.5 (Quoted MPG: 18.5) [5.4% difference]
2. Porsche Cayenne V8 Turbo Petrol - True MPG: 20.7 (Quoted MPG: 25.2) [-17.9% difference]
3. Aston Martin V8 Vantage S N430 Petrol - True MPG: 23.2 (Quoted MPG: 21.9) [5.9% difference]
4. Porsche Macan Turbo S-A Petrol - True MPG: 23.4 (Quoted MPG: 30.7) [-23.8% difference]
5. Lexus RC-F F Sport V8 Petrol - True MPG: 23.8 (Quoted MPG: 26.2) [-9.2% difference]
6. Audi S8 SE Executive LWB Petrol - True MPG: 24.7 (Quoted MPG: 29.4) [-16% difference]
7. Jaguar F-Type R Petrol - True MPG: 25.7 (Quoted MPG: 25.5) [0.8% difference]
8. Mitsubishi Shogun DI-DC LWB SG4 Diesel - True MPG: 26.5 (Quoted MPG: 33.2) [-20.2% difference]
9. Jaguar F-Type V6 Petrol - True MPG: 26.7 (Quoted MPG: 26.7) [-18.6% difference]
10. Subaru WRX STi Symetrical AWD Petrol - True MPG: 26.9 (Quoted MPG: 27.2) [-1.1% difference]
Unlike with the Top 10 most efficient cars, the True MPG figures for this petrol-guzzling bunch were not actually always worse than the manufacturers' claims. In the Top 10, every single car fell short of the official figures. But, as you can see from the numbers published above, a few of the low MPG manufacturers are actually selling themselves short, the tests actually found the true MPG performance to be better than the official MPG figures quoted by the car-makers themselves!
