For anyone looking to invest their money in future classics, experts have compiled a top ten of cars that they feel are likely to achieve the status in future.
The list of future classics released by automotive pricing experts Hpi includes cars that, according to their data, are relatively cheap to acquire at present but are holding their value, and have the potential to become future collectors’ items. Here's the ten cars alongside their current values:
1. Westfield (£6000 - £15000)
2. Vauxhall VX 220 (£9000 - £13000)
3. Peugeot 205 GTi (£4000 - £9000)
4. Audi TT MK1 3.2 (£3000 - £6000)
5. BMW Z3 (£1500 - £6000)
6. Citroen C6 (£4000 - £8000)
7. Rover Mini (£3000 - £8000)
8. Alfa Romeo GTV (£1000 - £6000)
9. Nissan Cube (£2000 - £5000)
10. Mazda RX8 (£500 - £3000)
“Classic cars have shot up in value over the last few years and in many cases represent a great investment opportunity”, said Hpi’s Clive Wilson.
“Classics in particular are snapped up by collectors and enthusiasts, so prices are constantly on the rise. The trick is how best to spot trends before they take place and maybe even try to redefine what is actually recognised as a classic. Future classics don’t necessarily have to be decades old, luxurious or expensive to begin with. Whether it’s a particularly interesting or unusual design feature or has an element of engineering integrity behind it, picking up an affordable car now could potentially provide a healthy return on the original investment as it takes on classic status.”
Topping the list are the Westfield, whose prices generally range from £6,000-£15,000, and the Vauxhall VX 220, which can be bought for around £9,000 to £13,000.
“Values of the Vauxhall VX 220 and Westfield sportscar have risen consistently over the past few years and worth keeping an eye on as we believe they will continue to rise in value”, says Clive Wilson.
The remaining eight cars on Hpi’s list all see current values top out below £10,000. Third on the list was the Peugeot 205 GTi, with current prices ranging from £4,000 to £9,000, while the Citroen C6 and Rover Mini can be picked up for between £3,000 and £8,000. However, the Audi TT MK1 3.2, BMW Z3, and Alfa Romeo GTV can all be acquired for less than £6,000 at present, with bottom end prices for the latter two at little more than a grand.
You can currently get your hands on a Nissan Cube for between £2,000 and £5,000, and Hpi think at that price the quirky mini MPV has the potential to be a solid investment. Another Japanese model completes the list, in the form of the Mazda RX8. Lower end values for the RX8 have dipped below the £1,000 mark, and the only way is up so it could be the right time to grab a bargain.
