What is the best car in the world? It's one of the ultimate petrol-head conundrums.

Ask around and you'll get a different answer from everyone you speak to. Nobody seems quite sure what the ultimate car actually is.

However, we've had a stab at it. We've chosen what we think are the ten best cars on planet Earth and assembled them in a rather haphazard manner below. And before you drift into a light coma, we'd like to point out that this is no trip down memory lane. Nope, there are now E-Type Jags or Peugeot 205s on this list, these are the top ten cars currently available to buy brand new.

Read on and click on the links to read information and reviews of the cars.

BMW 320dBMW 320d

When it comes to small executive saloon cars, BMW is now just in a different league. There is absolutely nothing to dislike about the 320d. The Beemer is an almost eerily faultless car which manages to be stylish, spacious, fast, economical, good to drive and safe all at the same time.

Range RoverRange Rover

The Range Rover simply has to be one of the most complete cars on sale today. Sure, it'll be expensive to buy and expensive to run, but that's sort of the point. The Rangey is the ultimate go-anywhere prestige motor.

McLaren MP4-12CMcLaren MP4-12C

Yes, it has possibly the worst name given to a car since the Peugeot Bipper Tepee, but the McLaren is the finest supercar ever crafted by human hands. If we had one minor criticism, it's that the McLaren is so good, it leaves you feeling a little cold...

Ferrari 458Ferrari 458

...which is where this comes in. Although perhaps not quite as technically accomplished as the McLaren, the Ferrari 458 offers stunning performance, gorgeous looks and the most desirable badge in the business.

VW up!VW up!

The SEAT Mii and the Skoda Citigo might be cheaper, but the VW up! is the true winner in this battle of the city cars. Well-priced, spacious and classy, the up! is the best car in its sector and it is impossible to get a more accomplished car for less cash.

Mazda MX-5Mazda MX-5

The MX-5 is the daddy of cheap roadsters. As good to drive as it was when it was first launched back in 1989, the Mazda offers reliable open-top motoring for a bargain basement price tag.

Rolls-Royce PhantomRolls Royce Phantom

If money is no object, there is no finer car than the Rolls-Royce Phantom. It's amazingly comfortable, surprisingly fast and built with the sort of attention to detail that makes a Mercedes S-Class feel like a Nissan Bluebird. The ultimate symbol of wealth and success.

Ford MondeoFord Mondeo

Mondeo has become a bit of a dirty word. Nobody wants to be 'Mondeo man', which is why it is now outsold by the BMW 3 Series, making the Ford, rather ironically, the cooler choice. It's a pity that nobody seems to want the Mondeo -- it's arguably the best family car money can buy.

Volkswagen GolfVW Golf

A legend. Other cars may do the same job for less money, and the Ford Focus is arguably a better car to drive; however, the Golf offers the perfect blend of quality, style and classless appeal.

Porsche 911Porsche 911 Carrera S

Forget your Turbos and your RS3s, the pick of the Porsches is the 911 Carrera S. Put quite simply, it's the best sports car in the world -- reliable, practical, stylish, fast and good to drive. Few cars have quite as much pedigree as the 911.
