The lap-record for road cars on the Isle of Man TT circuit has been broken in a Subaru WRX STI saloon.

Former British Rally champ Mark Higgins completed the 37.8-mile course in 19 minutes and 56.7 seconds. Higgins hit a peak speed of 162mph and completed the course with an impressive average speed of 113mph.

The car used was a standard production-spec WRX STI. The WRX was driven mostly unmodified with road-legal tyres, however some minor suspension tweaks were carried out before the record-breaking run and the car was fitted with a roll cage and race harness.

The previous record, set by the late Tony Pond in a Rover 827 Vitesse, stood for an impressive 21 years and Pond was the first driver to achieve an average speed of over 100mph.

Higgins was understandably delighted, claiming, "Setting the record was both the most exhilarating and the most frightening thing I have ever done."

The record-breaking Subaru is available to buy from all Subaru dealerships.
