It has been confirmed the Formula One legend Sir Jackie Stewart will be getting back behind the wheel at the Silverstone Classic event in July.
The Flying Scot will be reunited with the Matra-Ford he drove to British Grand Prix victory at the circuit half a century ago, a result which set him on course for the first of his three Formula One Drivers’ World Championships.
Sir Jackie, who turns 80 next month, will complete commemorative laps of the circuit on both the Saturday and Sunday. A renowned campaigner for safety during his career, Sir Jackie is now focusing his energy on another important subject. He will be using his appearance at the Silverstone Classic to raise both awareness and funds for Race Against Dementia, a charity he founded after his wife, Lady Helen Stewart, was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. In partnership with the festival’s official charity partner Alzheimer’s Research UK, Race Against Dementia funds fellowships to support early-career scientists looking for innovative solutions for dementia sufferers.
Sir Jackie explained. “I am looking forward very much to getting back to Silverstone in the Matra, even if not at quite the same speeds as 50 years ago! I am extremely grateful to the organisers for supporting Race Against Dementia, Helen will be truly proud of what we’re doing to challenge her illness and the challenge dementia poses to us all.”
The 2019 Silverstone Classic runs from 26-28 July.
