Double World Champion Fernando Alonso is making a surprise return to Formula One almost two years after announcing his departure from the sport.
The 38-year-old Spaniard is rejoining Renault for the 2021 season, the team with which he won back-to-back world titles in 2005 and 2006. He had walked away from the sport at the end of the 2018 season, after 314 Grand Prix starts, 32 victories, and 97 podiums, after a torrid spell in the uncompetitive McLaren.
Alonso departed the F1 scene a disillusioned figure, but the opportunity to join Renault for a third spell seems to have reignited his passion for the sport. “Renault is my family, my fondest memories in Formula One with my two World Championship titles, but I'm now looking ahead,” said Alonso, “The team wants and has the means to get back on the podium, as do I.”
