It has been announced that the Silverstone Classic event, which takes place on the last weekend in July, will include a celebration of the colourful career of James Hunt to mark the 40th anniversary of his F1 World Championship victory.
The hard driving, fast living star, who sadly died in 1993 aged just 45, won the 1976 world drivers’ crown in such dramatic fashion it made a natural Hollywood storyline and was immortalised in the award-winning movie Rush. Now Hunt’s sons Freddie and Tom have curated some special displays to wow the crowds at the world’s biggest historic motor racing festival. The displays will feature a number of James Hunt’s most notable road and racing cars, trophies, and memorabilia, at a circuit where – as reigning F1 World Champion – he won the 1977 British Grand Prix following an epic battle with John Watson.
“I know the crowds at Silverstone back in the seventies really took my dad’s heroics to their hearts, so it’s going to be very special for all of us in the family to be marking the 40th anniversary of his World Championship at this summer’s Silverstone Classic,” said Freddie Hunt, stepping out of his late father’s McLaren M23 after driving a demonstration run at the Northamptonshire track.
“I’ve seen so many photos and films of my father racing the M23 that it really was emotional to get behind the wheel and experience just a smidgeon of what it must have been like to race these fantastic F1 cars in period.”
