Although it's not one of the major shows on the international motor show calendar, the Johannesburg Motor Show is the single largest international car event in Southern Africa; more than 250,000 visitors are expected to pass through its doors when it opens to the public on Friday.
Because it's not one of the biggies there are far fewer new models on show than there would be in, say, Geneva or Frankfurt; however, that doesn't mean there won't be some interesting curios on display.
Take this for example. Called the Detour, it's based on the Dacia Duster, which, like all Dacias, is sold as a Renault in South Africa. Besides its striking orange paint job and garish graphics, the Detour features a number of extra features you won't find on the standard car including LED taillights, black five-spoke alloys with orange detailing, tweaked headlights and a chunkier front bumper with integrated fog lights.
Renault claims the car mixes "a little Mad Max with a touch of the Terminator" and "some Dakar dust 'n' dirt." We're not entirely sure what they mean by this.
Call us bonkers but we think that the Duster Detour looks amazing. We're big fans of the standard car's honest-to-goodness charm, simplicity and low price and there something pleasingly mad about an orange car with the word 'Duster' emblazoned down the side.
There are no plans to put the Duster Detour into production; however, if the public response to the car in Jo'burg is positive enough, a similar special edition could be launched. Whether or not Dacia would consider marketing such a car in the UK, however, is a different matter.
