The new Fiat Panda will be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month and will go on sale here in the UK next spring.

The new Panda is, inevitably, slightly larger than its predecessor - nearly four inches longer and over two inches wider. This means more interior space - Fiat claims that the new Panda can comfortably accommodate five people. The extra size should make the Panda safer and the new car is fitted with four airbags to protect occupants in a crash, and ABS and daytime running lights to prevent the crash before it happens.

Four engines will be on offer at launch: the 65bhp 2-cylinder TwinAir, a turbocharged TwinAir producing 85bhp, a 2.0-litre petrol and Fiat's 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel. All models will be fitted with a Gearshift indicator which helps drivers optimise their gear changes for the best fuel economy.

Also featured is Fiat's Blue&Me-TomTom LIVE system - a device which combines in-car entertainment and Sat Nav and allows the driver to use mobile phones and iPods without taking their hands off the steering wheel. The system will also give the driver traffic news, updated in real time.

Although not available at launch, a four-wheel-drive version of the Panda will be released in the near future.
