Jeep has revealed the first official images of its new Cherokee, ahead of the car's planned debut at the New York Motor Show next month.
Jeep was planning to keep the new Cherokee under wraps until its New York debut, but the car's cover was blown when leaked images appeared on the internet last week.
The Cherokee is the first new model to be born out of the Fiat-Chrysler alliance. In the US, the Cherokee will replace the Liberty in the Jeep line-up, while in the UK Jeep will be hoping that the new model will steal sales from Land Rover's Freelander.
Very little is known about the new Cherokee but Jeep claims that it will be up to 45 per cent more efficient than the outgoing Liberty and will offer "exemplary on-road driving dynamics."
Underneath, the Cherokee is based on Fiat's Compact Wide architecture, an enlarged version of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta's platform which is currently used by the Dodge Dart. It also seems likely that the Cherokee will be offered with a range of Fiat-sourced engines.
The new Jeep Cherokee will arrive on this side of the Atlantic in July. Traditionally, the UK market has proven a tough nut to crack for Jeep (and for all American manufacturers, incidentally), so it remains to be seen whether the Cherokee is good enough to steal sales away from its more established Euro-rivals.
