Mercedes-Benz has announced that it intends, before this decade is out, to introduce what it claims will be the first pickup from a premium manufacturer.
The company has identified the popular pickup market as a prime target for sales growth, with the midsize segment seeing rapid expansion in recent years with more people using pickups for private as well as commercial purposes. Midsize pickups have, in recent years, moved away from their utilitarian roots to boast much more car-like levels of comfort and equipment.
Mercedes-Benz have initially singled out Latin America, South Africa, Australia, and Europe as growth areas at which it plans to target the new pickup. The new model will be developed by Mercedes-Benz Vans, the division responsible for the current V-Class and Vito ranges.
Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, said: “As part of our ‘Mercedes-Benz Vans goes global’ strategy, the pickup is the ideal vehicle for the international expansion of our product range with a newly developed model.”
“We can perfectly serve customers looking for a vehicle that offers a high level of utility and at the same time has the comfort, safety, and design of a Mercedes-Benz passenger car. We will design our brand’s first pickup according to this recipe for success.”
