Car manufacturers must have absolutely no friends whatsoever, because whenever one of them celebrates its birthday, it always ends up giving a birthday present to itself.
Last week Lamborghini celebrated its 40th by giving itself the new Egoista concept, the Ferrari F50 was famously built to commemorate the Maranello firm's half century, and now Aston Martin has jumped on the "Oh, I really shouldn't have" bandwagon by unveiling its pressie to itself.
This is it. It's called the Aston Martin CC100 Speedster Concept and not only does it pay tribute to Aston Martins from the past -- including the company's 1959 Le Mans 24 Hours-winning DBR! -- but it is also claimed to show what Astons of the future will look like.
Underneath, the CC100 is fitted with the latest incarnation of Aston's 6.0-litre V12 engine mated to a six-speed flappy-paddle automated manual gearbox. 0-62mph takes just over 4.0 seconds and, at the top end, the concept is limited to 180mph.
Measuring around four and a half metres from nose to tail, the CC100's body and interior are crafted from carbon-fibre, which suggests that Astons of the future will feature more carbon-fibre. The current Vanquish, of course, already has an all-carbon-fibre body.
Aston Martin CEO Dr Ulrich Bez said of the new car: "CC100 is the epitome of everything that is great about Aston Martin. It represents our fantastic sporting heritage, our exceptional design capability, our superb engineering know-how and, above all, our adventurous spirit."
