McLaren has revealed its new 650S Spider alongside the 650S Coupe at the Geneva Motor Show today.
Mechanically identical to the 650S Coupe, the Spider is fitted with the same 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 you’d find in the hard-top, developing the same 641bhp and 500lb-ft of torque. This means a 0-62mph time of 3.0 seconds dead, a 0-124mph time of 8.6 seconds – only 0.2 seconds off the Coupe – and a top speed of 204mph.
The slight performance deficit is down to a 40kg increase in weight over the coupe caused by the new two-piece roof mechanism. However, McLaren claims that the Spider is immune to the lack of rigidity which often plagues open-topped cars thanks to its carbon-fibre MonoCell chassis, which requires no additional strengthening and offers, and we quote “identical handling and ride.”
The retractable roof can be raised or lowered in less than 17 seconds at speeds of up to 19mph.
Both the Coupe and the Spider are fitted with a wide array of luxury equipment as standard, including carbon-ceramic brake, Bluetooth, DAB radio, audio streaming, voice control and Alcantara trim.
