The Mazda MX-5 has set a new Guinness World Record this week after the 900,000th car rolled off the production line.

The MX-5 was first produced in April 1989 and has gone on to become the world's most popular roadster. In 2000, the MX-5 was certified the world's bestselling two-seater sports car by the Guinness Book of World Records when production reached 531,890 units, overtaking the previous record held by the MG MGB.

The MX-5 has been particularly popular in Britain and the British market accounts for over 10% of the total MX-5s sold. Today the venerable little Mazda is available in ten versions, with prices ranging from £17,975 to £23,305.

Programme manager for the MX-5, Nobuhiro Yamamoto, commented, "Since Mazda launched the original MX-5, it has undergone two complete product redesigns and a series of upgrades.  Its enduring success is due to the strong support it enjoys from MX-5 fans around the world."

The MX-5 is expected to eclipse one million sales in 2015.
