Kia is celebrating two decades in the UK today as it marks the anniversary of its British debut.
The Kia Pride was launched in Blighty in June 1991 and the Korean manufacturer managed to sell just 1,786 of them before the end of the year. Since then, of course, Kia's fortunes have changed; they sold 56,114 cars here last year and two million vehicles worldwide.
Kia Motors is much older than its UK division. Founded in 1944, the company initially manufactured bicycles. The company branched out into cars in 1974 with the Brisa - essentially a rebadged Mazda Familia.
Michael Cole, M.D. of Kia Motors UK commented on Kia's success: "Kia has been on quite a phenomenal journey in recent years. In less than two decades we've certainly lived up to our 'Power to Surprise' slogan by growing from a relatively small importer to challenging the best and most established brands in the industry."
