Call us old-fashioned, but we prefer it when car designers stick to designing cars.
Unfortunately, designers are amongst the most pretentious people on the planet, and are prone to monumental bouts of self-indulgence which make Bono look like the most humble man on Earth.
Case in point: the new Jaguar speedboat. Yes, that's right, Jaguar has designed a speedboat.
The man behind the creation is Aston Martin DB7-designer and all-round automotive genius Ian Callum. Callum was tasked with designing the speedboat to promote the new Jaguar XF Sportbrake, and from first glance we'd say he's done a pretty good job.
Then again, we know nothing about speedboats.
Callum said, "With the launch of the new Jaguar XF Sportbrake, we had an opportunity to create a vision of how our design philosophy might be applied to an alternative product, in which speed and beauty are also priorities."
For those of you who were looking for BuyYourSpeedboat.co.uk but somehow inexplicably ended up here, we'll give you the headline stats. The Concept Speedboat has a fibreglass hull, natural teak decking, a carbon-fibre fin inspired by the Jaguar D-Type and a fuel filler cap modelled on the one fitted to the Series I XJ.
To be fair to Jaguar, they're by no means the worst offenders when it comes to shameless self-promotion -- the Peugeot piano springs immediately to mind -- however, we do wish that the car manufacturers would pack it in. A Porsche accordion, for example, is the last thing the world needs.
The car, on the other hand, looks sensational. We're big fans of the XF, and the Sportbrake somehow looks even better than the saloon. Plus, it's the 2012 Towcar of the Year, so if you do need to haul around a 20-foot speedboat, this is your car.
