A quick glance through the merchandise brochure for almost any of the world's big car companies will reveal some monumental tat.
Porsche will sell you a smoker's pipe, Vauxhall a 'leather hip wallet', and Maserati, rather worryingly, will even furnish you with a monogrammed dressing gown.
However, in terms of scale, it's Peugeot that takes the proverbial biscuit, as the French manufacturer has recently diversified its operations... by unveiling the world's first Peugeot piano.
I kid you not. Peugeot's 'Joanna' is crafted from a blend of carbon-fibre and wood, and is the work of Pug's Design Lab.
Peugeot claims that the piano "takes the look of the streamlined hull of a competition sailing boat.
"With its sculptured surfaces and aerodynamic look, the piano has a slender appearance and is resolutely revolutionary."
Well, it's revolutionary alright; we're struggling to remember the last time a car manufacturer built a musical instrument (Jaguar was reportedly working on a range of pipe organs in the 1970s, but the plans never materialised).*
It's a fine looking thing, but we can't help wondering whether Peugeot should be directing its efforts more towards its automotive division; after all, there's a crisis going on in Car Land, and no amount of Billy Joel-esque piano noodling is going to solve that.
Anyway, we'll cut Peugeot a little slack; after all, they're not the worst offenders in the world of tacky automotive merchandise -- Ferrari will sell you a paperweight for £381 (delivery not included).
*Yeah, right. And they've taken the word 'gullible' out of the dictionary. Go on, check it for yourself.
