Cue the fanfare, unfurl the bunting and crack open the champagne, because the results of Practical Caravan magazine's Towcar Awards 2012 have been revealed.
The Jaguar XF has been crowned the overall winner, and this raises an important question. Have you ever actually seen a Jaguar XF towing a caravan?
A Kia? Yes. A D-registered Austin Montego? Yes. But not a Jaguar XF. Surely if you can afford the £30k Jag, you've got better things to be doing than travel up the A61 at 12mph on your way to a field in Whitby to spend a week playing scrabble as the rain hammers down on the roof of your own personal fibreglass coffin?
Anyway, back to the story. Apparently the judges were impressed by the Jag's fuel economy, resale values, pulling power and towing stability. And they're right -- the XF is a superb car, especially in 2.2-litre diesel form.
Other winners included the VW Golf in the up to 1425kg category, the VW Passat Estate in the 1425kg-1574kg category and the Land Rover Discovery in the 1900kg+ category. The Hyundai i30 was named as the Best Value Hatchback and the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer romped home with the award for Best MPV.
