The weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix marked an important milestone in the history of Formula One racing.
Sunday’s race in Shanghai – won by reigning champion Lewis Hamilton – was the 1,000th Formula One World Championship race.
The 2019 Formula One calendar features 21 Grands Prix across five continents, a far cry from the inaugural season in 1950 which saw six Grand Prix races – all in Europe - count towards the drivers’ World Championship, plus the Indianapolis 500.
The first Formula One Grand Prix took place in May 1950 at Silverstone, won by Guiseppe Farina who went on to claim the Drivers’ World Championship at the end of that season. Along with team-mates Luigi Fagioli and Reg Parnell, Farina stood at the top of an all-Alfa Romeo podium. Alfa Romeo returned to Formula One as an entrant this season, the only current team whose name appeared on the grid at that first race. While Alfa Romeo were unable to replicate the same success in the 1,000th Grand Prix that they enjoyed in the first, they did collect two points for ninth place courtesy of Kimi Raikkonen.
The Formula One circus now heads to Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on 28 April.
