The next generation Ford Mondeo will be available with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, Ford has announced, making it the largest Ford ever to be fitted with such a small capacity engine.

At the moment, the smallest engine on offer across the Mondeo range is a naturally-aspirated 1.6-litre petrol unit; however, Ford claims that the EcoBoost engine outperforms its higher-displacement ancestor.

The EcoBoost will develop 123bhp and 125lb-ft of torque in the Mondeo, 8lb-ft more than the 1.6. And, of course, the small engine capacity makes it incredibly efficient -- Ford claims a CO2 figure of just 130g/km, making the new Mondeo one of the cleanest cars in its class.

Despite this, Ford claims that the EcoBoost delivers the refinement of a much larger engine.

Unfortunately, the new Mondeo is still more than a year away, although it will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show next month.
