Ford's 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine has won the top prize at the 2012 International Engine of the Year awards.

The three-cylinder petrol engine is available in the Ford Focus, the C-Max, the Grand C-Max and the B-Max. Ford claims that the EcoBoost provides the power of a larger engine thanks to turbocharging, variable valve timing and direct fuel injection.

The EcoBoost also won the award for 'Best New Engine' and 'Best Engine under 1.0-litre'.

Other winners included the V8 engine fitted to the Ferrari 458 and the BMW M3's 4.0-litre V8. The Chevrolet Volt/Vauxhall Ampera won the award for 'Best Green Engine.'

The International Engine of the Year awards are judged by a panel of 76 motoring journalists from 35 countries around the world. Engines are ranked according to performance, economy, drivability, refinement and technology.
