Ford has unveiled its new Ka Concept, previewing a new global small car which will replace the current second-generation Ka within the next two years.

The new five-door concept was revealed at a special event in Barcelona and is based on the Ka Concept which was revealed in Brazil last month.

Ford will be looking to improve on the sales performance of the existing Fiat 500-based Ka with the new model. The current model has been something of a sales disappointment, failing to match the substantial successor of the original 1996 model.

The first thing to point out about the new Ka Concept is that while all previous Kas have been three-door models, the Concept has five doors. Ford claims the car is able to seat five comfortably and is on offer with the sort of technology you'd normally find in larger cars.

It's paramount for Ford that the new Ka is a sales success. Not only is the company losing sales to more premium brands and budget brands alike, but Ford projects that the small car segment will increase by 35 per cent over the next four years. The Ka therefore has quite a weight on its shoulders.
