Ford has announced major plans to introduce some of its successful American cars to European markets.
This includes the introduction of the Ford Edge 4x4, the Nissan Juke-rivalling Ford EcoSport and a right-hand drive version of the upcoming Mustang.
Ford Edge
The new Ford Edge is expected to reach production by late 2014, and is designed to rival the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Dodge Journey. The current Edge is sold mainly in North and South America but is also offered in the Chinese and Russian markets.
Very little is known about the forthcoming Edge, but expect it to be fitted with a range of diesel and EcoBoost engines when it finally reaches the UK.
Ford EcoSport
The Fiesta-based EcoSport is expected to arrive in the UK over the next 18 months. The EcoSport has been developed entirely in South America -- a first for a Ford global car -- and is likely to be offered with the same engine line-up as the B-MAX.
Ford Mustang
Following demand from UK motorists, Ford is set to offer the next-generation Mustang in right-hand drive. As you can see, the new model retains the retro-inspired looks of the old car; however, it's slightly smaller than the outgoing model, making it more suited to narrow British roads.
The big news, however, is that the next-gen Mustang will be fitted with independent rear suspension for the first time, eschewing the antediluvian live axle set-up of the old car.
Unfortunately, British buyers are unlikely to be offered the flagship 5.0-litre V8 Mustang, instead having to make do with a 3.7-litre V6 or a turbocharged four-pot EcoBoost unit.
