Ferrari has taken the wraps off its new California T at the Geneva Motor Show.
While the new Cali is more of a development of the old California which has been with us since 2008 rather than an all-new model, the new car has been thoroughly updated, both inside and out, to keep it fresh.
The big change is that while the old car was fitted with a 4.3-litre naturally-aspirated V8, the new gets a new 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine which developed 553bhp, up from the 483bhp produced by the previous California. Torque is also up from 373lb-ft to 556lb-ft.
As a result of this, the new California will get from 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds and from 0-124mph in 11.2 seconds.
Turbochargers have a tendency to muffle exhaust notes and spoil the noise of a car; however, Ferrari denies that the California suffers from this problem, claiming that the flat-plane crankshaft and three-piece exhaust manifold and turbo housing combine to create a suitably Ferrari-esque howl, especially at high revs.
The California T is the first turbocharged road-going Ferrari since the legendary F40 of 1987.
Ferrari also claims that the new California T offers “sports car dynamics” thanks to quicker steering, new springs and dampers and a new stability control system.
The first deliveries of the new California T are expected to start in September.
