Fiat Tipo buyers should eschew the standard versions of the model and pay extra for the optional safety pack say Euro NCAP, after disappointing results in crash tests.
The new Tipo recently underwent safety testing by Euro NCAP – the independent consumer organisation which tests all new cars released on the European market - and with the standard safety equipment the model achieved just three stars. However, when fitted with the optional safety pack its performance in the tests improved enough for it to be awarded an extra star.
Even with the optional safety pack the model fell short of a full five star rating; a new AEB Pedestrian test was introduced by Euro NCAP earlier this year, and while the Fiat Tipo’s optional safety pack includes a Forward Collision Warning system with Auto-Brake that functions at both low and high speeds, it has not been designed to mitigate pedestrian crashes.
“The Tipo is marketed as a functional car which maximizes value for money”, said Euro NCAP’s Secretary General Michiel van Ratingen, “However, to maximise safety, and to bring the car up to the protection levels offered by its biggest rivals in this segment, consumers should not pass over the safety pack.”
