Mephistopholes, the car which set the Land Speed Record in 1924 is to appear at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend.

The car – which is based on a 1908 Fiat chassis – broke the Land Speed record in 1924, achieving a speed of 146.01mph at the hands of its creator, Sir Ernest Eldridge. It has a 21.7-litre aeroplane engine which produces 320bhp and received its name due to the clouds of smoke which it emitted when driven at full tilt.

The car will be on display in the Cathedral Paddock and will be climbing the Goodwood Hill twice a day over the weekend.
