Chevrolet has revealed its new Corvette Stingray at an exclusive event in Detroit, ahead of this year's Detroit Motor Show.

The new 'Vette is the seventh incarnation of Chevrolet's legendary sports car and is the most advanced and most powerful car in the model's history, featuring an aluminium construction, carbon-fibre bodywork and a seven-speed manual gearbox.

Under the Corvette's bonnet sits the new 6.2-litre V8 engine which we told you about last year. In standard trim, the engine develops 450bhp and 450lb-ft of torque, making for a 0-62mph time of under four seconds. But despite this extra performance, the new Corvette should be more fuel efficient and less polluting than its predecessor thanks to the fitment of cylinder deactivation technology which turns off four of the car's eight cylinders on light throttle loads.

Chevrolet has also put a lot of effort into making the new C7 better to drive than the C6. The new model is 57 per cent stiffer and 45kg lighter than its predecessor and although it shares the same leaf-sprung suspension setup as the old car, every component in the new system has been lightened to lower the 'Vette's kerb weight. The new car also benefits from 50/50 weight distribution which should make for a balanced and precise driving experience.

Chevy is also boasting that the new Corvette features its most upmarket interior. Hand-stitched leather, aluminium and carbon-fibre are all fitted to the car's cabin and all of the main functions are controlled via two 8-inch touchscreens.

Mark Reuss highlighted a link between the new car and the iconic 1963 Corvette Stingray, saying: "Like the '63 Sting Ray, the best Corvettes embodied performance leadership, delivering cutting-edge technologies, breathtaking design and awe-inspiring driving experiences.

"The all-new Corvette goes farther than ever, thanks to today's advancements in design, technology and engineering."

Prices have yet to be confirmed, but expect the new Corvette to start from around £50,000 when it goes on sale later this year.
