This is the new and improved 6.2-litre V8 which will be fitted to the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette when it hits the market late next year.

We told you about the new Corvette last week and, although Chevy has yet to release any details on the car itself, we can reveal some stats on the new Corvette LT1 engine. And the big news is that it's actually quite clever.

It's a cliché to say that all American engineering is primitive by European standards; but, like all clichés, it does have some basis in fact.

However, for the engine in new Corvette, the engineers at GM have pulled out all the stops; it gets direct fuel injection, active fuel management and continuously variable valve timing, and is said to be the most economical engine ever fitted to a Corvette.

Okay, so this hardly makes the new engine the last word in technical sophistication -- the Europeans and the Japanese have been selling engines with direct injection and variable valve timing for well over ten years -- but the stats speak for themselves.

The new engine will deliver 450bhp and 450lb-ft of torque -- 19bhp and 26lb-ft more than the current car. This means that the new 'Vette will accelerate from 0 to 62mph in under four seconds.

And on top of this, it will return 26mpg, which is actually pretty good for an engine this size.

Alongside the new 6.2 V8, the Corvette will also be available with a new 5.5-litre V8 and a twin-turbo V6 -- the first non-V8 engine to be fitted to Chevy's flagship model since the 1950s.
