Audi has announced that production of its all-electric R8 e-tron has been put on hold indefinitely.
According to a report from Auto Express, it now seems unlikely that Audi's all-electric supercar will ever see the light of day.
Despite the car's sensational performance figures -- the e-tron managed an astonishing 8.09 minute lap time at the Nurburgring -- Audi claims that the traditional electric car shortfalls of short range and long charge time are too great to overcome with existing technology.
The R8 e-tron is powered by a pair of electric motors and a lithium ion battery pack, developing a combined 375bhp and 605lb-ft of torque. 0-62mph takes 4.6 seconds and the car is limited to a top speed of 124mph (although the limiter was raised to 155mph for the Nurburgring run).
But despite the car's impressive performance figures, the mileage figures tell a slightly less rosy story. With a range of just 134-miles and with a full charge taking around 12 hours, the R8 e-tron was never really going to be a realistic alternative to a petrol-powered supercar.
