An Audi concept named ‘Jack’ used a piloted system to make a trip across America to the Consumer Electronics Show in Los Angeles.
The A7 3.0 TFSI started its epic journey in Silicon Valley - the home of technological advances - in front of the world’s media. Audi had promised a drive which would be mostly driven on autopilot and which would offer the level of comfort which most customers would demand for their daily driving needs.
Audi were pleased to announce that the data gathered from this long-haul test will be helpful in furthering their quest to perfect the driverless car. The car used laser and radar sensors which are production-ready alongside cameras which provided the information required for it to navigate urban roads safely. The concept relieves the driver of driving duties at speeds of up to 70 mph; the car can initiate lane changes and passing manoeuvres as well as accelerate and brake independently.
“The results of the test drive underscore our piloted driving competency”, said Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Audi Board Member for Technical Development. “I’d like to thank the team of Audi engineers, VW Group R&D and the Electronics Research Laboratory for making it such a great success.”
