The BMW M family will be gaining a new member next year with the introduction of the two-door 370bhp M2.
The latest M model will bridge the gap between the present M235i and the latest M3; it will come with a turbocharged 3.0 litre six cylinder engine packing 370bhp. It is hoped that it will be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show next year and prices are expected to begin at around £45,000.
Transferring the power will be a standard six-speed manual or optional seven-speed dual clutch transmission with shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel. Both options will feature automatic stop/start technology and brake energy recuperation alongside a thermal energy recovery function.
The first versions of M2 Coupe will come in a rear wheel drive setup with a limited slip differential which is controlled electronically but it is thought that the model will see a four wheel drive option at some point in its early life.
Insiders at BMW suggest that the M2 Coupe will be capable of reaching 62mph in 4.4 seconds and will be limited at 155mph as area all M cars. It is expected that they will reach UK showrooms in early 2016.
