The Audi A6 is set to become world's first executive saloon car to feature all-LED headlights.
Advanced LED headlights are to be made available as an alternative option to traditional halogen or bi-xenon lamps on the new Audi 6 Executive Saloon car, making it the first in its category to make this option available. The new LED units have strong environmental credentials as they use only 40 watts of electricity each - much more efficient than any of the alternatives - yet they still emit a strong white light which is similar to daylight.
The sophisticated units which are being fitted to the S6 will use only four one-chip and five two-chip LEDs to create the dipped-beam light, while the daytime running lights which are now mandatory on all new cars due to EU legislation will use 24 white LEDs for each headlight. In addition to providing efficient use of power, this also delivers a long service life.
The basic LED lights are enhanced further with intelligent systems like adaptive light control and high-beam assist. The adaptive light system tailors the light provided by the headlamps depending on the driving conditions, with separate settings for city driving, motorway driving and driving on country roads.
The control unit for the adaptive light control system utilises a small video camera located in the base of the rear view mirror, and is even able to take data from the optional MMI navigation plus Sat Nav system to anticipate changes to the ambient lighting conditions. One example of this is the cornering light arrangement, which is triggered prior to the car reaching a corner or junction in order to improve visibility on the approach.
The high-beam assist allows for maximum visibility without the risk of dazzling other drivers. It works by automatically varying the range and width of the headlights between dipped and full beam according to the situation. This also incorporates an all-weather function that uses the rear view mirror camera to detect the headlights of on-coming vehicles and adjust the light intensity accordingly.
This latest announcement means that Audi, which was the first manufacturer to feature all-LED headlights on a production car with the R8, now has a substantial and expanding range of cars which come with this feature as an option, including the A7 Sportback and A8 luxury saloon.
This new feature adds to an already impressive equipment list on the A6 Saloon, which includes Google Earth mapping, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, Audi active lane assist, head-up display, and Bose surround sound audio. Prices start at £30,145 for a new 2.0 TDI SE model of the A6, and the new all-LED headlight option adds an extra £2,710 on top of that price.
