This is the Honda Micro Commuter, a new micro-sized electric prototype which is set to rival the Renault Twizy.

First shown as a concept car at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, the Micro Commuter has space to seat one driver and either two child passengers or one adult passenger.

Honda will begin testing the Micro Commuter in Japan next year with the aim of assessing how the car can be used as a short-distance vehicle for families, pensioners, commuters and public sector workers.

The Micro Commuter weighs just 400kg -- around 50kg less than the Twizy -- and uses lithium-ion batteries to power a 20bhp electric motor. Honda claims a range of around 37 miles and a top speed of 50mph.

An interesting feature of the Micro Commuter is that the normal dials (speedometer, rev counter etc.) are replaced by a tablet device which is recharged via solar panels fitted to the car's roof. The tablet also doubles as a rear view mirror.

There is no word yet on when, or if, the Micro Commuter will reach production; however, expect to hear more news when Honda begins testing the car in 2013.
