The Vauxhall Zafira Tourer ES 2.0 CDTi 16v looks great, seats seven and offers plenty of luggage space. It's not bad to drive either.

PROS:  Stylish and spacious, this is a great family car which offers efficiency and comfort.

CONS:  Handling is not as smooth as it could be and the back two seats are not suitable for adult passengers.

Behind the Wheel

The Zafira Tourer's 2.0-litre diesel engine produces 128 bhp at 4000 rpm and 221 lb-ft of torque at 1750-2500 rpm. This translates into a 0-60mph time of 10.6 seconds and a top speed of 119mph which is perfectly adequate for a car of this type. You should remember, however, that the Zafira Tourer will not match these figures when fully laden.

The suspension is fairly effective at cushioning the feel of bumps and imperfections in the road but the ride can be a little jittery at low speeds. The diesel engine also works quietly and there is little road and wind noise in the cabin, even at speed.

Looks & Equipment

The Zafira Tourer looks absolutely great. We really like the new front end and the way the headlights seem to extend down into the front bumper. The interior also feels well made and is very stylish.

Standard equipment includes power steering, central locking, stability control, air conditioning, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control and an advanced stereo system with both CD and MP3 compatibility.

Alloy wheels, a built-in sat nav system, an alarm, climate control and leather seats are all unavailable on this model whilst some features, such as rear parking sensors, will cost an additional £385.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The interior is very spacious and flexible - the rear seats can be adjusted and stowed individually which not only makes rear seat passengers more comfortable but also makes the interior space more useful.

When all seven seats are occupied you only get 65-litres of boot space however, this increases to 710-litres with the rearmost seats down. With all the seats folded flat you get a cavernous 1860-litres of luggage space.

The Zafira Tourer should be very safe and scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests. The car also comes with a fitted immobiliser to help protect it from theft but unfortunately there is no alarm available on this particular model.

The Zafira Tourer feels well made but only time will tell whether it will be reliable or not. However, it is offered with a 100,000 mile warranty which should put buyers' minds at rest.

Value for Money

At £22,715, this is one of the cheaper models in the Zafira Tourer range. It is also pretty efficient and you should achieve 54.3 mpg on the combined cycle. This helps to keep running costs low and road tax will be reasonable under VED band E thanks to carbon emissions of 137g/km.

For the money, the range of features and practicality which is on offer is high and this means that, whilst the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer ES 2.0 CDTi 16v may not be as fun to drive as some of its rivals, it is definitely a wise investment for the money-conscious motorist.
