The Vauxhall Zafira Tourer Elite 1.4i 16v Turbo Auto 5dr delivers 138 bhp and 147 lb-ft of torque. This translates into a top speed of 122mph and a 0-60mph time of 10.2 seconds which is slower than the diesel models in the range but still decent for a car as large as this. The engine's lack of torque, however, does make the Zafira Tourer seem sluggish and unwilling to overtake.
The car handles well thanks to responsive steering and excellent suspension which limits body lean whilst still keeping the ride fairly composed. The cabin is also well insluated against engine, road and wind noise.
The Zafira Tourer looks sensational. Vauxhall really are on a bit of a roll at the moment in the styling department. The interior is also very luxurious and well designed.
This Elite model offers minor improvements on the SRi trim level with power steering, central locking, stability control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control, rear parking sensors and an advanced stereo system with both CD and MP3 compatibility still standard features.
On top of this, leather seats also become a standard fitting, whilst climate control replaces air conditioning. A built-in sat nav is still priced at £855 whilst Bluetooth connectivity can be added for £220.
The old Zafira was praised for its innovative seating solution and the new Zafira Tourer is much the same. The cabin is very practical and the rear seats can be adjusted and folded down individually, allowing the owner to trade passengers for boot space.
Like in most MPVs, the boot is pretty tiny with all the seats in place with just 65-litres on offer. However, this increases to 710-litres with the rearmost seats down and with all the seats folded flat, you get 1860-litres.
There is a question mark over reliability as the Zafira Tourer is a relatively new car and Vauxhalls are not renowned for their durability. However, it is offered with a 100,000 mile warranty which should put buyers' minds at rest.
The Zafira Tourer should be very safe and scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests.
At £26,595, this is one of the more expensive models in the range but is still relatively reasonably priced when compared to its rivals. Unfortunately, you'll only get 39.2mpg on the combined cycle which is poor by modern standards. Road tax costs are also a little higher than in other models (under tax band H) due to relatively high carbon emissions of 169g/km.
The Vauxhall Zafira Tourer Elite 1.4i 16v Turbo Auto 5dr may not be as fun to drive as some of its rivals it is definitely a wise investment for the motorist who wants high levels of luxury and practicality.
