The practical family car market is one which has been well provided with quality cars over recent years, and the problem with the Vauxhall Insignia is that it does suffer with being compared with such cars as the Ford Mondeo. Although the Insignia looks good and does have some decent fuel efficiency, it is a little rough around the edges and the lack of refinement and disappointing driving experience are particular problems.

PROS:  The Insignia is a very desirable car that does look the part on the outside, and is improved by the sporty SRi settings, and can also deliver some exceptional fuel efficiency figures.

CONS:  The ecoFlex and Start/Stop technologies that improve efficiency don't come cheap, and the Insignia isn't quite as refined or as good to drive as some of the class leaders.

Behind the Wheel

The suspension on the SRi version of the Insignia is firmer and sportier than on the standard version, but it still feels a little rough and bouncy when driving on poor road surfaces. However, it does do very well on the motorway, where the ride is comfortable and the steering suitable. The steering can be a problem when you start driving on twisty roads, as it doesn't feel particularly accurate. There is plenty of adjustment in the steering wheel and the driver seat, but the small back window does limit visibility.

The engine performance of this version of the Insignia is good considering the fuel efficiency, with acceleration from 0-62mph taking only 8.9 seconds. The top speed of 129mph is also more than enough for motorway driving, but the wind noise and engine noise experienced at these speeds is particularly frustrating.

Looks & Equipment

For a few years before the Insignia, Vauxhall had been releasing a few cars that didn't really seem that desirable, but the fine aerodynamic lines and the classy front end certainly improves this situation. Inside the car is very comfortable and stylish, with a nice centre console that looks bold and attractive, although the number of buttons can make things a little fiddly when it comes to using them while driving.

The level of equipment that is provided with the SRi isn't too shabby at all, with cruise control and climate control making this car good for long journeys. Power seats and a good CD stereo do make things a little more enjoyable in the cabin too, but regular road users may want to spend the extra money to have satellite navigation included with the car.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Insignia is certainly a practical family car, with plenty of space in the front and the rear for four adults, although headroom can be an issue for taller passengers. The boot is also a good size offering plenty of space for luggage. One issue that may concern potential buyers is that Vauxhall doesn't have the best reputation for reliability, but this may be allayed by the excellent warranty package that is offered with a Vauxhall at the moment.

The Insignia is also delivered with a good level of safety equipment, including six airbags to protect passengers in the front and the rear of the car. It also has stability control and a number of other driving aids to help keep the car under control, and all of these features have combined to win the Insignia five stars in the Euro NCAP safety test.

Value for Money

One of the issues that many people have with the new generation of Vauxhall engines is that the price for the models with efficient engines are much higher, meaning many of the savings will be lost, and this version has a list price of £24,680.

The running costs are very good, with the engine able to deliver an average 64.2mpg. Insuring the car is not too expensive and the insurance group is on a par with many of its rivals, but depreciation is a big problem as it is with many other Vauxhall cars. The excellent 100,000 mile warranty is a big plus especially for those who aren't likely to cover particularly high mileage but want a warranty that will last the lifetime of the car, and this is complemented by one year's roadside breakdown cover.
