Does anybody fancy a four-wheel drive Insignia? We thought not. Save yourself two and a half grand and buy the standard front-wheel drive model - it's the pick of the range.

PROS:  The SRi 2.0 CDTi (160ps) is a great option thanks to good performance levels and impressive fuel consumption.

CONS:  Limited rear headroom, poor rear visibility, firm ride

Behind the Wheel

The Vauxhall Insignia SRi 2.0 CDTi (160ps) 4x4 Start/Stop 5dr's engine develops 158 bhp and 258 lb-ft of torque. 60mph arrives in 9.6 seconds and you'll keep on accelerating right up to 134mph.

The handling is hardly razor sharp but it's perfectly competent and feels stable on the road thanks to the four-wheel drive system. The ride is also very comfortable, making the Insignia a competent long distance cruiser.

Looks & Equipment

Standard kit includes power steering, central locking, stability control, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control and an advanced stereo system with both CD and MP3 connectivity. Alloy wheels are also fitted as standard.

Rear parking sensors can be added for £395 whilst a leather seated interior is priced at £1,145. Bluetooth connectivity and a built-in sat nav are still only available for an additional fee, costing £220 and £850 respectively.

The Insignia is a great looking car too thanks to handsome proportions and some neat styling.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Insignia should be very safe and achieved the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests.

The interior is also fairly spacious and legroom is ample throughout. However, tall rear passengers will find that rear headroom is at a premium thanks to the Insignia's sloping roofline.

There is plenty of space in the boot, however, with 530 litres on offer with the rear seats up and 1470-litres on offer with the rear seats down.

Value for Money

Priced at £27,125, this model is a lot pricier than its front-wheel drive equivalent. However, good fuel efficiency of 50.4 mpg on the combined cycle means that running costs will be relatively low.

CO2 emissions of 149g/km mean that road tax will be relatively inexpensive under VED band F. Insurance premiums should also be pretty reasonable under group 23.
