The Vauxhall Exclusiv 2.0 CDTi 5dr's 2.0-litre diesel engine churns out 128 bhp at 4000 rpm and 221 lb-ft of torque at 1750-2500 rpm. This gives the car a decent top speed of 127mph and a 0-60mph time of 10.8 seconds which is impressive for a car clearly designed for fuel economy.
It is the handling that impresses most of all though. It's not brilliant and it's certainly not a match for the BMW 3 Series but it takes corners with ease, offering plenty of grip and accurate steering. It is also very comfortable.
The Insignia is a very good looking car - light years ahead of the shonky old Vectra. The interior is stylishly designed and tastefully appointed and everything feels well put together.
Standard equipment includes power steering, central locking, stability control, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control and an advanced stereo system with both CD and MP3 connectivity.
Rear parking sensors can be added for £395 whilst a leather interior is priced at £1,045. Bluetooth connectivity and a built-in sat nav are still only available for an additional fee, costing £220 and £850 respectively.
The interior is fairly spacious in the front seats and there is plenty of adjustment in both the driver seat and steering column to ensure that the most comfortable driving position is attained. However, headroom is in short supply in the rear seats.
When the seats are in place there is a moderate 530 litres of capacity on offer whilst folding down the rear seats can expand this to an impressive 1,470 litres.
The Insignia should be very safe and scored the top five star rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests. Reliability is unlikely to be an issue as the Insignia feels well made and is suppled with an impressive 100,000 mile warranty.
Priced at £21,355, this model is a great investment for those on a limited budget. On top of the low purchase price, running costs are also kept low thanks to fuel economy of 60.1mpg on the combined cycle. Carbon emissions of 124g/km give the car fairly good green credentials as well, allowing owners to benefit from reasonable road tax costs under tax band D.
