PROS: The cabin is an extremely comfortable place to spend time and it comes with a reasonable amount of equipment. The turbocharged engine has adequate power and is smooth at cruising speeds. It has a very large load area and its sleek styling manages to conceal its considerable dimensions.
CONS: The ride is a little on the firm side particularly at lower speeds and the gearbox is rather notchy. The overall ambience in the cabin is very pleasing although it’s a way behind its German rivals and it certainly doesn’t feel and look up to the quality that a premium car should.
The 2.0 litre four cylinder turbocharged diesel engine produces maximum figures of 187 bhp at 4000 rpm and 295 lb-ft at 1750 rpm which feels quite adequate. A 0-62 mph time of 9.4 seconds and a top speed of 140 mph are respectable figures.
This Saab 95 SportWagon’s ride is refined when cruising on motorways and more than up to the challenge of attacking a winding country road, but push too hard and the handling becomes overwhelmed by the car’s size and weight. The steering feels precise though and overall it is very nearly up there with the best in its class.
There’s plenty of adjustment in the driver’s seat and steering wheel so most drivers should be able to find a decent position. The dashboard is laid out reasonably well with easy to read instruments but for the most part it looks and feels way behind the dashes of its rivals.
In spite of its imposing size, the Saab 95 SportWagon Vector SE 2.0 TTiD 5dr is a smart and stylish looking car from the distinctive Saab grill to the curvaceously sculpted rear with its svelte wraparound tailgate window.
Inside you get keyless start, a CD player, MP3 connectivity, Bluetooth, electric windows, electric door mirrors, Satnav, cruise control, rear parking sensors, leather seats and dual-zone climate control as standard. It also comes with alloy wheels, an alarm and immobiliser and integrated front fog lights.
Metallic paint is a £540 option.
Space is one thing this car has in spades both in the front of the cabin and the rear as well as the boot, which offers 527 litres of space with the seats in place or 1600 litres with them folded. Unlike many of its rivals, the side walls are completely flat and the rear wheel arches don’t intrude into the space either so loading large items is a breeze. There are numerous compartments in the side walls too, for handy stowage of smaller items.
This Saab 95 comes with many safety features including six airbags, ABS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and stability control.
Saab’s fair reasonably well in the reliability stakes but they aren’t without their problems. This car comes with a three year 60,000 mile warranty.
At £29,695, the Saab 95 SportWagon Vector SE 2.0 TTiD 5dr is competitively priced. It has a spacious, comfortable cabin with an excellent spec and a cavernous luggage space. It drives well and its ride quality is generally capable, but it lacks the panache and excitement of its German rivals. It feels sturdy and well bolted together but it’s not the most appealing premium estate in its class and it’ll attract fairly low resale values.
A combined cycle of 51.4 mpg is a respectable figure for a car of this size and with a CO2 emissions figure of 146 g/km the taxes and running costs won’t break the bank.
